Create A Katy Christmas Tradition For Your Family!

Written by Hanna

When I was a little girl, one of my favorite parts of Christmas was Mom taking us to see Christmas lights in Katy. She would fill up a thermos with Columbian coffee for herself and hot coco for me and my siblings, then play Bing Crosby album “White Christmas” since the weather was far too warm to deliver snowflakes and off we would go driving around Katy to see Christmas lights. We enjoyed seeing everyone’s holiday decorations and the bright twinkling red, green, and white Christmas lights but that wasn’t our favorite part. It was time spent together and the friendlies of this festival season. Mom would allow us to roll down the windows of the mini van and we would wave or yell “Merry Christmas” at people outside their home or walking in the neighborhood to see if they would respond, they always would. Then after we saw all the Katy Christmas lights, we could see Mom would stop for dinner and dessert. It was almost as much fun as waiting for Santa to arrive.

Now that I’m older, I can’t wait to have little ones of my own to pass tradition down like my older sister has. If you are looking to start your own family tradition in Christmas lights of holiday decorating, then contact Christmas Wonder Lights. Here are a few other family traditions we have that you may also want to start:

Good tiding We Bring To You & Our Community

My Mom Melissa Emerson, is the owner of Christmas Wonder lights, I think they are Katy Best Christmas light team but then again I am partial. One of the things they do I like to be a part of is helping our community. Since I was young we have participated in Wreaths across America that has helped us to remember why we are free by laying a wreath for America's veterans. While it may feel that we are being a blessing, its us who gets blessed! A few years ago when Mom's business grew she begin to donate a portion of all proceeds from installing Christmas lights in Katy and greater Houston to a program she started called the Present Project. The Present Project looks for families in the community who need some holiday cheer then our team purchases a holiday meal, gifts like clothes or toys, and decorates peoples homes who may not have a Christmas. This past Christmas we selected a Mom who came to Houston’s MD Anderson to receive cancer treatment from Miami. The holiday interior decorators put up a tree, decorated the fireplace and stairwell and installed Christmas lights for Reena and her 3 kids. Here is a picture of the Christmas tree and ornaments I help to decorate.

Christmas Eve In Katy TX

Another tradition our family has is every Christmas Eve since I can remember our family comes home from candlelight service and Mom allows us to open one present, it was always matching pajamas that as we got older, we always expected. Now that our family has grown we take turn drawing names so that we all buy someone PJ;'s including Mom. When we take pictures on Christmas morning, we all match. Then after we exchange gifts, she reads us a short stories to us like the Littlest Angel. When Mom was young my Grandpa use to read this story to her and my Uncle. But my favorite is Rudolph the red nose reindeer.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

had a very shiny nose

and if you ever saw him

you would even say it glows. (like Christmas lights)

All of the other reindeer

used to laugh and call him names.

They never let poor Rudolph

join in any reindeer games.” -Johnny Marks, songwriter

Having a holiday tradition has built our family bond and helped us remember that the real reason for the season is not Christmas lights but Jesus, family, and spreading cheer.
